Both are available for pre-order in Google store for the 32 GB storage options while the 128 GB ones will be shipping in some weeks. By the time you’re reading this, it could be available in stores as well. Now the Google Pixel will replace the Nexus lines. Yes, Nexus is dead now…rest in peace. So, both the phones are almost the same and both are amazing phones. And if you’re planning to get one, I’m sure you’re wondering which one to get. This question should be plaguing you if you have the Google Pixel or the Pixel XL on your wishlist. If so, then, stick with us as we compare both the phones for you in Google Pixel vs Google Pixel XL: Which one should you get .
Previously, as it was with the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, they were made by different brands, LG and Huawei. So, these were not similar in designs and nothing much at all. But this time, both the Google Pixel and Pixel XL are made by HTC for Google, so, they both pretty much scream Google. There is so much similarity in the design and specs, that none will particularly stand out from the other. Both the phones are just equally good. So, our job here at Google Pixel vs Google Pixel XL: Which one should you get is to break down what’s different and where. These phones are different in these terms:
Google Pixel vs Google Pixel XL: Size and Design
First up, in Google Pixel vs Google Pixel XL: Which one should you get, is the design. The design of the Google Pixel and the Pixel XL are pretty much the same. Both have an aluminum unibody with chamfered edges and a third of the body is covered in glass panel. The headphone jack is at the top while the USB-C charging port is at the bottom. The glass panel is where the fingerprint scanner and the camera resides on the back of the phone. It gives the phones a new unique look but it may or may not please you. I kinda like it, though. So, it just depends on your preference. Both the Pixel phones are available in three different colors: Quite Black, Really Blue and Very Silver.
Talking about the size, it is obvious that the Google Pixel is larger of the two phones. The Pixel is a phone with 5″ display while the Pixel XL offers 5.5″ display. The Google Pixel measures (143.8 x 69.5 x 8.5) mm and weighs about a 143 grams. In comparison, the Google Pixel XL measures (154.7 x 75.7 x 8.5) mm and weighs about 168 grams. We can see that even in size, there’s not much of a difference. Both the phones have the same thickness and the Pixel XL is only slightly bigger than the Pixel. But, it can change the comfort in your hands when you hold them. If you’ve got small hands, then you should get the Google Pixel while if you have no difficulty in handling phablets, the Pixel XL is your choice.
Google Pixel vs Google Pixel XL: Display
Next in Google Pixel vs Google Pixel XL: Which one should you get, let’s discuss the display. The Google Pixel XL, being slightly larger, has 5.5″ display, compared to the 5″ display of Google Pixel. Both are AMOLED displays and are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4. The difference rests on the screen resolution of these two phones.
The Google Pixel features (1920 x 1080) p HD resolution on an AMOLED panel with a pixel density of 441 ppi. And the Google Pixel XL offers (2560 x 1440) p QHD resolution on the same AMOLED panel with 534 ppi pixel density. The AMOLED displays deliver vibrant and strong colors. Both will look great, but in the Daydream VR, the Google Pixel XL will outshine it’s smaller sibling. Also, the bigger screen on the Pixel XL means that it’s easier and convenient to use the Split-Screen feature. So, what is it that you need? Ask yourself. If you want a bigger display to enjoy the media, convenience of the Split-Screen feature and better VR experience, get the Google Pixel XL. But if you’re not really a VR person, or think that that the Split-Screen isn’t very useful to you, you can stick with the Google Pixel.
Google Pixel vs Google Pixel XL: Battery
Next up in Google Pixel vs Google Pixel XL: Which one should you get, let’s talk about the battery. In this department, the phones differ significantly. The Google Pixel has 2770 mAh battery which might just barely be enough to last you throughout the day while the Google Pixel XL has a huge 3450 mAh battery, which will get you through the day. Both are non-removable and charge though the USB Type-C. Also, both of these have Fast Charging, which can give you 7 hours of battery life in 15 minutes of charge! That’s just sweet, isn’t it?

Now, even though the battery on these two differ significantly, due to the Google Pixel XL’s higher resolution, it will need the extra juice, so, in the end, the difference in battery power might boil down to very little. Since, there isn’t much difference here but just a tiny line, well, you can decide by looking at other features.
Google Pixel vs Google Pixel XL: Similarity
In Google Pixel vs Google Pixel XL: Which one should you get, let’s also talk about what is similar, not only what is different, so that it will be easier for you to decide. So, what is similar? Pretty much everything else.
The cameras are the same. Both feature a 12.3 MP primary camera with f/2.0 aperture and 1.55 micron-pixels, that will make for great photos. The secondary camera rests at 8 MP with f/2.4 aperture and 1.4 micron-pixels. These, however, don’t have OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) but do feature EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization), which is entirely software-based, but with the highest camera ratings ever, the cameras should be pretty good. Talking about Performance, both phones are extremely powerful with the latest Snapdragon 821 processors backed by 4 GB of RAM. The Snapdragon 821 is supposed to be 10% faster than the Snapdragon 820, so, operations will be top-notch on both. Choosing the smaller one won’t compromise on the phone’s power.
In the software department, both phones come with the latest Android 7.1 Nougat, with many interesting features. With the death of Nexus, the whole stock Android thing will be on the Pixel now, but, not without some adjustments. Both the Google Pixel and the Pixel XL will have the latest software Android 7.1 Nougat, but with a little skin on top, i.e. the Google Pixel Launcher. But this is the closest thing to stock Android you’ll ever get. The best part in it is Google Assistant, that is terrifyingly accurate.
For storage, the phones will have two models: a 32 GB model, which is the baseline and a 128 GB model. None of them feature any expandable storage, though. But being Google phones, you will get unlimited storage on Google Photos in the cloud, even at full resolution. So, you’ll not have to worry about storage.
Google Pixel vs Google Pixel XL: Price
The phones are quite pricey if you ask me. Sure, it’s a Google phone in it’s entirety, but these are also the first timers in the smartphone market. So, is it wise to have a big price tag for that? Anyways, the smaller Google Pixel is priced at $649 while the Google Pixel XL is priced at $769. And, this pricing is for the baseline model of 32 GB while the 128 GB models will cost you $100 additionally. Comparing the price, the Google Pixel looks more appealing than the Google Pixel XL. But if you’ve got money to spend and wouldn’t want to compromise in things like Resolution, battery and display size, get the Google Pixel XL.
We’re at the end of Google Pixel vs Google Pixel XL: Which one should you choose . So, now that you know everything that is to be known about these phones, it’s time to make the decision. But let me tell you, no matter which you choose, both are beast of performers and are just great. In the end, it will only come down to small changes in your requirements. If you look at the price tag, I’d personally prefer the smaller Google Pixel. Because for a difference of about $120, there isn’t much of a difference among the two. But hey, I’m not a very keen VR user as well and my hands are kinda small. So, yes, that would be my choice. What about yours?
