HTC is now confusing us, well……at least it’s customers, by releasing another smartphone in it’s already crowded One-series. I guess the One series from HTC was a one-hit wonder for some time which made HTC known for ‘One Series’ than anything else. So, I guess they’re releasing more of the One Series to get all that they can from the name. This time, it’s the HTC One M9s, a downgraded and cheaper version to this year’s flagship- the HTC One M9.The new smartphone, or should we call it, just-another-version-of-the-already-existing phone, is available for pre-order in Taiwan only, for US $390 (TWD 12,900). That’s a very high price-slash from the HTC One M9’s $649! So, we can already assume that there must have been considerable amount of downgrades in the features. This is: HTC One M9s Launched in Taiwan for $390 and let’s see what the cheaper phone has to offer.
The body of the One M9s looks the very same as the M9, with the all-metal body and same measurements. Surprisingly, it weighs a gram more at 158 gms. You can’t really see the difference between the M9 and the M9s, with the same 5″ screen and the Boom Speakers of HTC. For a downgrade phone, the display is quite good, the same to the M9, with full 1080p HD display and a resolution of 1920 x 1080. The changes are all in the inside.

The main difference is the chipset, with 2.2 GHz Mediatek Hello X10 against M9’s 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 810. We can’t say that the phone’s performance is worse, though, it will be revealed later. But it features only 2 GB of RAM, 1 GB less than M9’s. Also, it has only 16 GB of internal storage compared to 32 GB of One M9; it’s extendable upto 2 TB with a microSD, but such cards as rare as prized gemstones. The camera has gone down considerably to 13 MP rear with f/2.0 aperture from the 20 MP of One M9, not that the M9’s camera was impressive or anything. So, it’s not unreasonable to say the M9s’ camera will be worse; the camera includes Optical Image Stabilization, at least. The front camera has is the same 4-Ultrapixel, so, that’s nice. And, lastly, the battery it features is the same 2840 mAh, which is still not great or anything for an Android smartphone, but it’s still better than some others out there.
Well, the M9s is a budget phone with all the basics of a good Android smartphone and it doesn’t have anything unique to offer. It’s just a mashup of already present features in the market with a smaller price tag. For now, it’s only available in Taiwan but there’s no information on it’s availability to the rest of the world. Anyways, I think HTC is doing a great job of confusing it’s potential customers. HTC One M9s may soon launch in the US.
